Chaired by Sri S.K. Joshi, Chief Secretary, Telangana, a round table meeting of social safety net program heads supplying food to public was conducted on 21st Sept 2019, in chief secretary’s office, Secretariat, Hyderabad. Special Chief Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, Secretary, School Education department, Principal Secretary, Women and Child welfare & Tribal Welfare department, Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies and senior government functionaries participated in the deliberations. Representatives from KHPT, GAIN and National Institute of Nutrition also attended the meeting. Gururaj Patil from KHPT and Somya Tewari from GAIN made presentations followed by discussions on various aspects of fortification.
KHPT, through a GAIN funded project named “Addressing micronutrient deficiency through fortification of edible oil, milk and wheat flour with micronutrients” is working at state level to promote and strengthen food fortification since May 2018 in Telangana, with support and coordination of Food Safety division. About 67% of total edible oil produced for retail consumption by 10 major edible industries in the state is being fortified. Similarly, 3.8 lakh Litres Per Day of milk is being fortified out of an estimated total 8 LPD of pouch milk by 9 major milk dairies of the state.
