The Knowledge Management team conducted a colloquium titled ‘Debugging’ the Superbug: Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and its impact on public health on June 28 at the KHPT office. The session was facilitated by Dr Tasneem Khanam, a post-doctoral researcher at the University Hospital Muenster core facility on Transgenic Animal and Genetic engineering Model (TRAM).
The key message of the session was that anti- microbials must be used in moderation as the over-use of these drugs in Asia and Africa have caused about 1.2 million deaths. Dr Khanam emphasized that the problem of anti-microbial resistance makes even the smallest of the illnesses difficult to treat. She suggested that in order to tackle the issue of AMR, the government, the clinicians and individuals must have a collective role in creating awareness on AMR, and administering anti-microbial drugs when it comes to agriculture, environment and while treating illness.
